PhotoHunt: Pink

I've been thinking about having this place bilingual, and the opportunity comes reading Raymond's blog. Raymond is the first and only one commentator I have had so far, and today, visiting his blog I found he is participating in the PhotoHunt. I thought it was a good idea, and went to see mypicture files, because I needed to make a connection between my blog's topic: travels and the topic of the contest: theme pictures. So this one is a picture taken this June, in one of my trips to Brattleboro, VT, one of the places has become like home, because I am traveling there since 1999, when I was studying at the School for International Training.

It was the 6th Annual Strolling of the Heifers Parade & Festival. For those of you not familiar with New England towns like Brattleboro, this festival shows the town's spirit. Someone told me that the idea of this festival was to create a parallel to the world-known San Fermín's Fiesta in Pamplona, Spain and in a way it shows the different life style. It is evident that while showing the long tradition of farming in Vermont, in special cattle, you also appreciate the rural, quiet and friendly style of the area. Most of the town people wear clothes with a "cow" topic, but this woman performing udders was quite original!

El motivo para esta entrada es participar en el PhotoHunt, una idea que acabo de conocer abriendo el blog de Raymond, hasta ahora mi único comentarista। Para participar en esta iniciativa hay que colocar una foto en tu blog que corresponda al tema semanal previamente elegido y luego avisar a la iniciadora de la idea. En mi caso, y para no salirme de mi tema, me tocaba buscar una foto rosada y que fuera al mismo tiempo un buen motivo para hablar de uno de mis viajes.

No fue difícil encontrarla y por suerte tenía que ver con uno de los temas que tenía en lista para escribir: Brattleboro, Vermont, Estados Unidos. Conozco este pueblo desde febrero de 1999, cuando fui a estudiar a School for International Training, una escuela de postgrado pequeñita y amigable, en medio de las colinas। Al seguir visitándola a lo largo de los años, he podido conocer un lado de Estados Unidos que por lo general pasa desapercibido en los medios masivos: los pueblos rurales, tranquilos y casi enteramente "blancos" y en los cuales el estilo campesino va mezclado gratamente con un elevado nivel educativo.

La foto tiene que ver con un festival anual, llamado "Strolling of the Heifers", algo así como "Paseo de novillos". Un amigo me dijo algo así como: Si los de Pamplona pueden tener su San Fermín, por qué nosotros no este festival". Y de hecho, sería difícil imaginarse un San Fermín en Brattleboro. No conozco Pamplona, pero mi poco tiempo en España me hizo percibir un alto grado de intensidad en su gente, difícil de explicar. Brattleboro, por el contrario, parece tranquilo, pacífico, amigable, tanto que probablemente muchos de mis amigos limeños se aburrirían muy rápidamente viviendo ahí. El festival es un homenaje a la tradición de familias granjeras, específicamente ganaderas de la localidad y por ese motivo, la gente suele vestirse con motivos vinculados al tema. Esta mujer, disfrazada de ubre, me dió el exacto tono rosado que necesito para el concurso.
